I am not sure how the realities that downtown Chattanooga faces corresponds to the article above. While I am not an economist, just from a glance, one notices that all the cities mentioned in the article above are clearly centers of commerces, industry, and culture. This seems to be precondition for a thriving art community: artists proximity to sites of commerce. (As one of the sub-heading states: "follow the money.")
The reality? Industry has moved from Chattanooga. Commerce and culture in the city now hinge primarily on tourism. The green movement is not at this point an incentive for big business in the city. As for artist housing, well though subsidized, it is not inexpensive. And racially and ethnically speaking? The green and renaissance movement downtown is more along the lines of gentrification, which as we all know, has its own purposes (not always negative) which do not amount to creating an open diverse communities. Hence, I am puzzled by the posting of the article. Is it a comparative dialogue to the realities of downtown Chattanooga? If so, a question is provoked: what is really the Main/Jefferson Heights renewal all about? Considering the national economy at present, I am afraid for an artist to survive one may have to arm oneself with an online site and a sturdy vehicle for art show travel. Or, one could take the tourist art route. And those looking for diversity? well, as sarcastic as this may sound, they may as well take a trip to Hamilton Shopping Mall. Utopia has moved to the 'burbs? God forbid.
